"I'd rather not speak than to present with a lousy presentation."
This is the mindset that I am giving myself every time I arrange a presentation in either small or big crowd.
Being unprepared with your presentation is a disrespect to your audience. That is for sure! The time, the effort and the interest of your audience can be wasted with a "not so" effective presentation.
So how do you make a killer presentation?
Doing a killer or effective presentation is not only about having the message but also the delivery of that message and presenting it as a relevant message.
Relax! You can do it. The following rules are part of my best-used rules in my presentations.
1. Study Your Audience
Your audience is the most important part of your presentation. Without knowing them, you do not have a message right for your audience.
Know them then you know what ideas, what jokes, what problems and products you can deliver.
2. Follow a Story Flow
Point A must be relevant to point B, so as the point C. And as you transition to each of these points, don't go back. There has to be a proper sequencing of your story flow. Forget what you forget but don't restart. Trying to remember what you've missed may confuse your audience.
Point A: Introduce a problem or discover a desire.
Point B: Share your message.
Point C: Close with your message as the solution to the problem or desire.
3. Be Concise and Clear
Speak in their language, from their shoes and their vibes concisely.
Language is not only the choice word but it is how the words are used. Gen X, Millennials, Gen Z relate to the same storyline differently.
4. Your Materials Must Create Emotion
Less is more. Being relatable allows you to capture their emotion to follow you as you try to say your points.
Millennials & Gen Z are well-read generations. They are the "newsfeeds" generation. They can learn something as quick as 3 seconds.
You have to study what you use in your presentation - the image, the colors, the texts, the sound, and the effect is it something that they are looking?
A presentation is BORING with text loaded slides. A low-quality image is not interest-grabbing. You lose the attention with a lengthy video.
Remember to keep within 6 words per slide and 1-3 minutes per video.
5. Practice!
The best way to deliver your killer presentation is by practicing your delivery. Your gestures, your posture, your tone are acquired as you practice what you need to deliver.
With the right amount of practice, you become confident, with confidence you will look sincere - that is how you become effective and believable.
No one made it so perfect the first time. Do not get intimidated with the process of becoming an effective speaker. Speaking is a learnable skill. It is not only a skill but a precious asset in building your career in our highly competitive world.
