5 Rules to an "Instagram-able" Style

Oh yes! Reading this is maybe making you ask of what a word - Instagram-able!

Let's just say I'm referring to that outfit or style that you always want to wear most of the time if not all. Not only because it looks good or comfortable on you but because it gives you such "macho" or "gwapo" confidence. Or simply you just look really smart and stunning. (In silence. I know men do not want to be stunning always.

Men style is less discussed in most conversations but this does not mean that men are not stylish or should not be stylish.

Dress for success.

This is another purpose of our topic. And this is very important to help you close that business deal or even be chosen in your next job application.

Here my rules:

Rule # 1: Quality over price.

Not because your shirt/jeans is not a known brand it is not made with good quality. If you will have to decide if it's good on you remember that the price is not the indicator but the the fabric, the design, the sewing and the fit.

I know it gives you that awesome feeling if you are wearing an expensive coat, shirt or jeans (so am I too) but please consider your choices.

Rule #2: The Use.

T-shirt is nice. Polo is nice or even becoming topless is nice but depending on its use.

So if you will have to decide for your style ask yourself these questions:

What's the weather like here/there? Being in a tropical country like Indonesia or Philippines, T-shirt is a necessity and normal but sometimes even if the desert cities like Las Vegas or Dubai shirt is worn with style and class. There are clothing styles you can wear aside from weather considerations but always consider your comfort.
What event? Because you should not wear T-shirt on your business presentations unless you own the business or they badly need your business. And you cannot also wear coat and tie in the beach unless it's a beach wedding.

But you can also wear sleeveless on the beach while working on your business. So where am I wearing it is also another question.

I had this moment where my European friend asked me, how come Asians wear skinny jeans during summer?

But Asians might also ask back, how come Caucasians wear shorts in church (I know not all :) ) But yes culture and even the place where you are going is another consideration.

Rule #3: Your Body Type.

Let's start with the neck - quick note V-neck is ideally worn by those with "shorter-looking" neck while Rounded/Crew neck is ideally worn by those those who have "longer-looking neck."

This might not be the rule always but it is a good point to remember. For some both V Neck or crew neck are use to emphasize or hide the some details.

Should you wear a crew or v-neck?
Crew necks are suitable for men with a small chest or sloped shoulders as well. They help in creating an illusion of broader shoulders, giving your body more proportion.

V-necks are perfect for shorter gents because they create an illusion of length and height, elongating the neck. They provide balance to men with long necks and narrow faces.
When it comes to shirt, I usually keep the buttons close on "formal" or scenes where I want to look more presentable or maybe "gentleman" but sometimes I also want to be playful and youthful so I keep up to 2 buttons open. Adding extra fresh feeling. ;-)

When it comes to the fitting, emphasizing your toned shoulder through your sleeves is always nice but make sure it does not look too short or too long and you have enough allowance to BREATH specially on T-shirts.

Rule #4: Your Color

Own at least few basics – white, black, gray and navy.

  • White – Complements all skin tones. The classic white t-shirt should be part of your wardrobe.
  • Gray – A mixture of different shades – gray virtually enhances your body shape. Watch out for sweat marks which are easily visible on dark colors.
  • Black – Another versatile color option, black pairs well with most outfit combinations.
  • Navy – A better choice than black that is more suitable during the day and great for creating tonal looks when combined with jeans.
  • Other Colors – Make sure the color of the t-shirt doesn’t clash with your skin tone. And black is the only exception for me :-)

Rule 5: Mix and Match

It's always great to be creative. Try to mix and match so your style will not look boring.

Adding extra necklace, watch, skinny jeans is great, folded short pants is nice too.

White shoes is fresh but brown leather shoes is the new elegant and black is classic.

P.S. Smile. It's very important to any grooming! :-)
